Vietnamese folk opera (Hát Chèo) always fascinates. Drama lives both on and behind the stage. Is reality as brilliant outside the limelight? What are the emotions behind all the make-up?

This portrait series of Chèo Opera represents some among hundreds of the characters in Chèo. You will see the Male lead (Sinh), Female lead (Đào), Old village woman (Mụ), Old Fortuneteller (Lão), Clown (Hề), Guard, Bad character, Good Character…I use colors and texture to show that - even under the spotlight, under the heavy make-up – their faces still cannot hide traces of time. All their wrinkles and travails remain layered under. But when these actors are on stage, they always give their best to shine and let go of hardships beyond the stage.
